Bay River Houseboats

Can I live in a house boat in Delaware?

I live in Seattle now but I'm hoping to move to Delaware. I want a house boat and I was wondering if they are common or easy to find in northern Delaware. Out of state would be fine if it's around Wilmington.

  1. you can always find a houseboat anywhere you go just look up local marinas around the area
  2. i live in delaware and there are none that i know of maybe in maryland which isnt that far delaware is a small state.
  3. Delaware is not like Seattle, I'm sorry to say- we don't have a calm, placid Sound where living in something like a houseboat is possible. Yes, we have Delaware Bay, but it's part of the Atlantic and is subject to the tides and the storms that come off of it in the winter. On the other side of the state, there is the Chesapeake Bay, but that has far too much commercial traffic ( not to mention recreational boaters) to make living on it a very practical idea. Wilmington is a city that's not noted for it's beauty- and the crime rate is rather high there. Delaware is a small state- there are more people living in the Seattle area than there are in the whole state of Delaware right now, including the city of Wilmington. Another problem I can see with getting a houseboat, particularly if you were on the Chesapeake, is that you'd have to be willing to put up with a lot of military traffic, especially air traffic, from the Patuxent River NAS and the surrounding communities. Those planes can get noisy, and there are a lot them around right now because of the wars we are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Where I live, we have the same issue- I am fairly close to the capital at Dover, and the one thing the Air Force can't prevent is my being able to hear those planes when they fly every night between 10 pm and 2 am. Those planes are the ones that bring our war dead home- Dover AFB carries the nickname "the military morgue" for a reason. I hope you find what you are looking for, and I wish you good luck with your move. Delaware is a great state to live in- there's no sales tax here, and we have a moderate climate most of the time, with great beaches for swimming. I have enjoyed being here very much.
