Bay River Houseboats

Are some parts of Sussex County Delaware on the Delaware River or Bay?

My ancestor was a slave to a Mark Davis "on the Delaware" from 1754-1780. I have found a Mark Davis (1731-1799) who lived in Sussex County Delaware, and I believe him to be my ancestors owner Any help is much appreciated. Mark Davis' father was Nehemiah (1709-1789) Davis and he was from Cedar Creek Hundred, Sussex County Delaware. Nehemiah Davis owned seven slaves who were involved in the textile industry. My own ancestor was a farmer and also he had boatbuilding skills. Remember Mark Davis probably moved away from Cedar Creek and went closer to the Delaware Bay.

  1. Slaughter Beach, Broadkill Beach, and Lewes are all on the Delaware Bay and in Sussex County. Once you hit Cape Henlopen, you are on the ocean and not the bay.Lewes is now (and always has been) the most populous of the three, so I would focus any further research on Lewes.
  2. The state only has three counties, Sussex is the southern most so it's whole cost is at the bay. River is farther north. The south end of the state is made up of a lot of farm land. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Datamil_de_map.jpg Edit: Found a "Mark Davis" in this and some dates listed in the 1700s at the top of the page, with mention of Cedar Creek. http://www.deldot.gov/archaeology/cubbage/pdf/cubbage_chain_title.pdf You may have seen this already? http://books.google.com/books?id=SGvDdmPnN3IC&pg=PA53&lpg=PA53&dq=slaves+sussex+%22cedar+creek%22+textiles&source=web&ots=NkTsezlXa6&sig=jJLfGfIZYO3IfWXQfQ4z6CM0qDg&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result Couldn't find anything with hints of names of the people he 'owned', but if you want to pay a visit and kick a headstone... http://www.delmarvaroots.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/scstore/p-DD002.html?L+scstore+eiid3343+1218856127 Maybe this would be helpful if you haven't seen it? http://www.dcnyhistory.org/books/munstam.html "The pioneer grist-mill was down the river from where W.A. Cowley's mill and foundry is located. Nehemiah Davis's grist-mill was put up below the dam of Tanner's mills, and his second mill was on the site now occupied by Tanner's grist-mill"
